Steam Chat

Once upon a time, chat was embedded directly into the Steam app. Then Valve decided to put it in a separate application, and this is where the story begins about how a good idea meets a bad implementation.

According to the idea, everything is logical: a list of friends with status and current game display, personal correspondence, group chats, community channels. GIFs, stickers, Steam emojis, preview links, videos, and tweets are supported. You can send invitation links to new friends, set up notifications separately for each contact or group. On paper, this is a full-fledged game messenger.

In practice, it's an application that breaks down at the first opportunity. You open the correspondence and take off. You turn off to answer the call, come back — a black screen and reboot. The interlocutors are shown offline for no reason. Users have been writing about these issues for more than two years, and although the October 2025 update partially fixed the account login, the list of open bugs is still long.

It's a shame, because the application has an audience: not everyone has a computer at hand when friends call for a game or just write. You need a mobile chat, but one that works stably.

For now, Steam Chat remains an application with potential and chronic problems that Valve is in no hurry to solve.
